Australian Matthew Jones won the Honda Classic Sunday at the PGA National Golf Club, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Matthew, who won his second title on the PGA Tour after seven years from his first title, was able to withstand difficult conditions to play and won the title with a record margin over the second place.
Jones played an excellent tournament where he started with an amazing first round, equaling the record of the course at 61, 9 under par. Then he continued his balanced performance at the weekend, where he took the lead on Saturday and maintained it until the end despite the difficult playing conditions at the weekend as some of the players have achieved disastrous results. But Jones maintained his balance and finished the championship with 12 under par, surpassing Brandon Hagy, who finished second with 7 strokes under par, 5 shots behind the winner. This difference between first and second place is considered the highest in the history of the tournament, equaling those of Camilo Villegas (2010) and Jack Nicklaus (1977).
After winning his second title seven years later, Jones said: “It’s been seven years since I won. I’ve had some lean years in there. And to get back to the winner’s circle, and to win this golf tournament, was pretty emotional for me.”
